Deep canyons, airy heights!

Explore the scenic canyon Ötschergräben and the rustic Alpine hostel Schutzhaus Vorderötscher!
For centuries, small streams and rivers have been making their way through the Ötscher limestone massif, carving deep canyons, bizarre rock formations and breathtaking waterfalls. In short, this is one of Lower Austria’s most scenic and exciting hiking routes.

Day 1:
Arrival at the Wienerbruck entrance to the nature park (ideally on the Mariazell Railroad (Mariazellerbahn)). There you receive your Wilde Wunder Card and also a ticket to the nature park. Your hike begins with a descent into the scenic canyon Ötschergräben on Lassingfallweg, a trail that takes you past the historic Stierwaschboden power station and the Lassing Waterfall. After about 2 hours, you stop for a rest at Ötscherhias, a snack station in the middle of the canyon. Next are two more waterfalls Mirafall and Schleierfall and then Schutzhaus Vorderötscher, a rustic Alpine hostel authentically renovated. You settle into your room there and enjoy a pleasant supper. (Total walking time about 4-5h.)

Day 2:
After breakfast you hike back out of the canyon onto the open Alpine meadows of Gemeindealpe. There you stop at an Alpine lodge called Terzerhaus for fortification and take in the stunning views of Lake Erlauf, Mariazell and Gesäuseberge. In Mitterbach you hop on the Mariazell Railroad again and return to Wienerbruck. (Total walking time about 3.5h.)
