Details for: Radberg Sonntagberg
Brief description
Short and (very) intense! The famous pilgrimage basilica is especially challenging in the last 1000 m with gradients up to 16% and cobblestones. A dream panorama rewards you at the destination.
Description
The first kilometer leads uphill on a constant gradient (10%) on a long straight, partly in the shade. Two hairpin bends follow along with a second longer straight with a continued rhythmic climb. For about 200 m the road flattens between hairpin bends 3 and 4, offering (the only) chance to recover and especially to catch your breath for the last, most demanding kilometer.
With a maximum of 16% - often in direct sunlight - the basilica doesn’t seem to get any closer. Directly below the basilica, the side road turns right and becomes sharply steep again. (Rideable) cobblestone increases resistance and reminds of big Belgian classic climbs. Fight on - only 200 m left!
In the narrow alley directly below the pilgrimage church, lungs and thighs burn intensely until you reach the forecourt of the basilica. The 360° panoramic view of the Mostviertel and the Ybbstal Alps rewards the effort of the climb.
