Pfarrkirche und Pfarrhof in Reidling
Church
Description
The present parish church was built between 1803 and 1806 by the Viennese court architect Johann Amann (1765-1834). Amann is considered one of the main representatives of the sober classicist architecture of the first quarter of the 19th century in Austria.
The remarkable, strictly classicist building with its flat façade structure has a recessed choir with a 5/8 end and a façade tower with a boiler dome on the west side. The spacious nave consists of three bays with a suspended dome, the recessed, single-bay choir with a flat end is square-vaulted.
The Herzogenburg Abbey coat of arms and a stone relief "Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament" are emblazoned above the portal.
The church's patron saint is St. James the Elder (July 25). Artists such as the Kremser-Schmidt pupil Johann Wetzl (1767-1831) from Tulln, the Viennese painter Josef Schindler (1777-1836) and the Maulbertsch pupil Anton Spreng (1770-1845) were responsible for the uniformly classicist interior. He created the ceiling frescoes in the church.
