Pfarrkirche Nußdorf ob der Traisen

Church

Description

Although it is not a fortified church in the traditional sense, it was built in an extremely defensive manner and can be considered a remarkable late Gothic building. The mighty west tower with its high hipped roof stands out strikingly - similar to some churches in the Wachau region.

The keystones in the nave of the church are remarkable (openwork foliage, crossed vine knives, bunches of grapes, etc.).

Worth mentioning are a statue of the Virgin Mary (around 1500) and a painting "The Good Samaritan", which is attributed to the circle of Johann Michael Rottmayr.

Excavations in 1998 uncovered an eastern extension and a chancel with a 5/8 closure that had been hidden behind hillside pillars.

Under the presbytery of the church is a barrel-vaulted ossuary from around 1500, to which a new entrance was created during the excavations in 1999. On the walls are numerous Latin and German inscriptions from the 16th century
