Pfarrkirche Scheibbs

Church

Description

The mighty "Cathedral of the Erlauf Valley", as the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene is also known, bears witness to the prosperity of the citizens of Scheibbs during the heyday of the iron and provisions trade. Around 1130, at the suggestion of Konrad I von Peilstein, a vicarage of the parish of St. Leonhard/Forst was established in the existing settlement of Schibes. In 1322, the church of St. Maria Magdalena was separated from St. Leonhard and elevated to an independent parish. The late Gothic, three-aisled hall church was built at the beginning of the 16th century, almost completely destroyed by a devastating fire in 1645, then magnificently baroqueized and extended by four side chapels.
