Schloss Scheibbs

Castle

Description

When Scheibbs passed to the Carthusian Order of Gaming in 1338, they expanded Scheibbs Castle as the administrative seat for their extensive possessions. After the town was raised in 1352, construction of the fortifications began, of which the castle was an essential part.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the Gaming Charterhouse extensively redesigned the building into a four-winged castle. In 1782, the charterhouse was abolished and the castle subsequently changed hands several times. In 1867, the hammer master and industrialist Andreas Töpper acquired the manor and castle and had a prestigious extension with a large entrance and balcony built on Rathausplatz. Since this time, the district court and the district administration have been housed here. In 1953, the province of Lower Austria acquired the entire property.

Concerts are often held in the castle's atmospheric arcaded courtyard.
