Snow paradise: Hochkar ski area

Snow is assured in the highest elevated ski area in Lower Austria. Little slope bunnies and experienced racers find ideal conditions for skiing fun in all its varieties.

As Hochkar ski area is situated 1,800 metres above sea level, it is known as the highest elevated ski resort in the Eastern Alps. Therefore, this is the Lower Austrian region most likely to have a snow cover. The range of ski pistes is both ideal for youngsters and for skiing specialists.

Maybe it’s because of the snow assured from November until late spring that so many Austrian ski pioneers have their home turf on Hochkar. In any case, the most prominent examples for internationally recognized skiers made in Hochkar are top slalom racer Thomas Sykora and former world champion Kathrin Zettel. However, you do not have to be a race expert to enjoy your time on Hochkar ski runs. Apart from mogul slopes, deep snow descents and the fun park for skiing experts, the ski area offers gentle ski runs for novice skiers as well as a magic carpet lift and a fairy tale forest run for little ski stars.

About the slopes:

6 modern chairlifts, 2 tow lifts, one practice lift and 18 kilometres of perfectly groomed slopes guarantee short times of waiting and long skiing adventures: One third of the ski runs are perfectly suitable for beginners, 10 kilometres are of moderate level and 3.5 kilometres are only for experienced skiers.


You will enjoy the peaceful alpine scenery while making one of the husky-drawn sleigh rides, doing a snow-shoe hiking tour or walking on one of the numerous traced cross-country trails on the plateau Hochreit. For keeping in motion off-piste, winter sports enthusiasts try the nearby natural sledding slope or the ice-skating rink.
