Cafe-Restaurant Zum Schwarzen Elefanten
Café / confectionery, RestaurantDescription
We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful old restaurant, which has its roots in the early Baroque period.
This building was first mentioned in the land register of the Carthusian monastery in 1367. As early as the 16th century, it was run as a restaurant alongside a gingerbread factory.
Read on and be amazed: the former inn "Zum schwarzen Elephanten" was first mentioned by name in 1541. In a parish description from 1632, many years later, you can read about the "Hauß, so vom Eckh deß Rathauß gerad über an der obern seitten ligt". We found this name a little long and the spelling perhaps not quite in keeping with the times. Many a misfortune did not stop at this house. In 1711, a cyclone covered the entire roof. And in 1735, serious fire damage was recorded. Of course, everything was lovingly restored again and again - and yet the traces of time gnawed away at it. It stood empty from 1974 and was without a tenant until 2002, when the municipality, together with Alpenland, renovated the entire building, which is now a listed building, and brought it back into the public eye.
