The municipality of Ertl covers the upper Urltal valley with an area of 21 km². The highest elevations are the Adlersberg (830 m), the Freithofberg (895 m) and the Buchenberg (730 m). The only through road (L86) leads from St. Peter/Au along the Url to the Großauer Sattel, from where you can reach the Ybbstal to Waidhofen /Ybbs or to Maria Neustift in the Ramingtal or Ennstal.
The entire municipal area is farmed organically by farmers, who are mainly involved in livestock farming, and the Segur-Eltz forestry estate. The existing businesses provide local supplies and are mainly dedicated to wood processing. Excursion destinations for holidaymakers and locals include the surrounding panoramic mountains, which can be reached via leisurely hiking and estate trails.
