Gently rolling and mild in the north, mountainous and more alpine in the south – the Mostviertel, with its diverse landscape, offers walkers everything from leisurely to challenging routes, leaving the choice entirely up to them.
Rugged cliffs and striking gorges can be found in the southern Mostviertel Limestone Alps, which have been shaped by water over the centuries. It carves gorges, ravines and caves into the rock, leaving behind bizarre and impressive formations. An inviting setting for leisurely walks, but also for challenging mountain and climbing tours.
Numerous hiking trails provide access to three nature parks, a wilderness area and several mountains reaching almost 2,000 metres in height, such as the Ötscher, Dürrenstein, Hochkar, Gippe and Göller. Here, where everything is possible and nothing is compulsory, hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers feel as though they’re in paradise. Speaking of paradise: with the alpine pastures and huts in the Mostviertel, there isn’t a single peak with a breathtaking view that doesn’t offer a worthwhile stop for refreshments.
Safety on the mountain is paramount. Suitable hiking kit, including sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate hiking clothing, and protection from the sun and rain, is strongly recommended. Hiking poles can provide additional support whilst walking, ensuring better balance and thus greater safety on the terrain.
