Ennsdorf

Description

The municipality of Ennsdorf, with an area of 7.69 square kilometers and around 3,000 inhabitants, is located in the Mostviertel (in the Enns-Donau-Winkel) in the federal state of Lower Austria on the border with the federal state of Upper Austria. The municipal area consists of the districts of Ennsdorf and Windpassing. Since 1992, the port of Ennsdorf has been the hub for the transportation of pan-European goods.

In ancient times, the municipality of Ennsdorf, which lies 250 meters above sea level, belonged to the province of Noricum. Worth seeing is the gallows cross, which is a reminder of the execution site of the town of Enns, the wayside shrine on Westbahnstraße commemorates the end of the plague in 1650, and a cannonball walled into the façade of the large Vierkanter-Gasthof Stöckler (Spitzer family) with forged window baskets is a reminder of the year 1809 when Napoleon fired on Ennsdorf.

You can explore the surroundings of Ennsdorf on a hiking or cycling tour and have the opportunity to get to know the area better. Incidentally, the Way of St. James leads directly through Ennsdorf and the Danube cycle path from Passau to Vienna passes Ennsdorf.

A special sensation in Ennsdorf is the Zillenfahren, and the associated Zillen championships. In winter, curling and ice skating on the River Enns are very popular. In summer, the Enns is a cool river and is also ideal for fishing.

For a culinary visit, the cozy Gasthof Stöckler (Spitzer family) is the perfect place to indulge in its specialties.
