The hike through the Salzaklamm gorge near Mariazell is characterized by its wild and romantic yet easily accessible character. The path leads along the water through a narrow gorge, past impressive rock formations and over wooden footbridges built directly onto the rock faces. The interplay of rushing stream, moss-covered rocks and shady forest creates a pristine, almost mystical atmosphere.
Despite the spectacular scenery, the tour remains pleasantly manageable and is a varied addition to a stay in Mariazell. An experience of nature, light exercise and impressive views combine here to create an entertaining hike with a special landscape character.

We walk from Mariazell along Wr. Neustädterstraße to Kreuzberg—at the foot of Kreuzberg, we turn right into the Salzaklamm (No. 12) and walk along the river through the gorge—at the end of the gorge, we turn right toward Annaburg (residential area) and reach P3 via the Erzherzog Johann Weg, then following a short stretch of the B21 (sidewalk). We walk past the mini-golf course and up Abt Severingasse until we’re back on Wiener Neustädterstraße.
The hike into the Salzaklamm leads along the invigorating Salza River. Tall trees provide shade, and nature shows itself at its most beautiful. A lovely trail through a narrow, romantic forest valley!
The municipality of Mariazell has a comprehensive paid short-term parking zone covering the entire area. This zone is in effect Monday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The rate within the town is as follows: €0.60 for every half hour (maximum parking duration: 180 minutes!)

If you start the tour at P5 (just outside the center on Wiener Neustädter Straße), you can shorten the tour slightly—you’ll save yourself the walk from the main square to P5 and back again.
Take the Mariazellerbahn to Mariazell Station – take bus lines 170, 189, or 197 from Mariazell Station to the Mariazell bus terminal – it’s a 5-minute walk from the Mariazell bus terminal to the main square = starting point of the tour
