Golling an der Erlauf
The first documentary mention of Golling, located between Bergland and Krumnußbaum in the district of Melk, dates back to 1334. It was called "Goldarn", later also "Goldern", which means "by the gold panners".
Interesting things to do in Golling an der Erlauf
The Sepp Mayrhuber Documentation Center shows a documentation of the life and work of the painter Sepp Mayrhuber (1904-1989). Around 250 objects are exhibited on an area of 130 m², including around 140 works - stuccolustro, oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and various sketches as well as tools to illustrate the stuccolustro technique. A visit is possible by appointment at the municipal office (T +43 2757 2240) or with Mr. Anton Mühlbacher (T +43 2757 3458).
In the chancel of the parish church in Golling is the monumental stuccolustro fresco "Christ as Pantocrator with St. Francis" by Prof. Sepp Mayrhuber. Some of his other sacred works of art are also well worth seeing. The mosaic Stations of the Cross, for example, is an extremely valuable piece of art.
The Hitiag- und Heimatmuseum Golling an der Erlauf was founded in 2003 by a few dedicated individuals and opened in 2005. Since then, countless showpieces have been collected - a small selection of which can be seen below - and there is an interesting story behind each of these showpieces. The museum is open every first Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., and also on other days by appointment. Contact: Rosina Daxbacher (T +43 2757 3312).
