Dunkelsteinerwald

Welcome to the municipality of Dunkelsteinerwald!

The market town of Dunkelsteinerwald was created in 1970 by merging the four communities of Gansbach, Kicking, Gerolding and Mauer. The landscape is characterized by numerous small villages and individual farms, situated between richly wooded, gentle mountain ridges.

The largely untouched nature of the Dunkelsteinerwald, the clean air and the charming landscape invite you to go for walks and hikes.

A world-class sight can be found in the time-honored church of Mauer: the pilgrimage church "Maria am grünen Anger" is home to the famous Gothic winged altar from 1509.

A well-preserved Roman bridge, the fortified church in Gerolding and the massive church in Gansbach with a painting by the painter Martin Johann Schmidt, also known as "Kremser Schmidt", are worthwhile Excursion destinations for those interested in history and art.

Well-managed country inns invite you to linger or enjoy a longer, relaxing stay.
