Narrow roads, long climbs and ever-changing views of the mountains: the Ybbstal Alps are perfect for long road cycling tours. Between Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Ybbsitz, Göstling an der Ybbs and the Ötscher region, varied routes wind through valleys, over scenic high ground and up to proper mountain stages.
What makes them special is that many of the routes run along roads with little traffic. This means you can focus more on your own pace, the next bend and the surrounding countryside.
The Hochkar is a particular highlight for road cyclists. The starting point is Göstling an der Ybbs; from there, the Hochkar Alpine Road climbs steadily for around 12 kilometres. With an elevation gain of around 900 metres and gradients of up to 20 per cent, the ascent is a real challenge.
Those who work their way up, bend by bend, are rewarded with an impressive mountain panorama. The route up to the Hochkar is therefore not only a test of fitness but also one of the road cycling highlights of the Ybbstal Alps.
The Radberg can easily be incorporated into longer tours through the Ybbstal. Or you can make it the destination of the day: set off from Göstling, cycle up to the Hochkar and, after the descent, round off your day of road cycling in a relaxed manner.
