Emerald-green water, wooded mountain slopes and peaks offering spectacular views characterise Lunz am See. This mountaineering village in the heart of the Ybbstal Alps combines unspoilt nature with a vibrant mountain culture, warm hospitality and a village life that has retained its own rhythm.

From the lake up to the peaks

LakeLunz forms the tranquil heart of the village. All around it lies a diverse world of hiking and mountaineering – from leisurely trails through woods and valleys to extensive tours through alpine scenery.

A particularly popular destination is the Ybbstaler hut. More experienced mountaineers will find impressive touring opportunities around the Dürrenstein, the Ötscher and the Hochkar. The alpine tour between the Hochkar, Dürrenstein and Ötscher also showcases the scenic diversity of the Ybbstal Alps.

Wild nature of exceptional value

The Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area, with its unique primeval forest of spruce, fir and beech, lies within the municipality’s boundaries. This strictly protected landscape is one of the region’s most valuable natural areas and represents a natural environment that is allowed to develop largely free from human intervention.

The House of the Wilderness

In Lunz am See, the exhibition brings the unique features of the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area to life in a modern and interactive way. It offers fascinating insights into the largest primeval forest in the Alpine arc and vividly illustrates ecological interrelationships, natural processes and the importance of unspoilt nature.

Experiencing nature in every season

In spring, the woods and meadows around the lake come to life. Summer combines mountain hikes with refreshing hours by the water and cultural events on the lakeside stage. In autumn, clear views, peaceful paths and the colours of the woods create a special atmosphere for walking.

Even in winter, Lunz am See remains closely connected to nature. Snowshoe walks, ski tours and – when conditions allow – other winter activities reveal the quiet side of this mountaineering village.
