5 winter days in the Ybbstal Alps

Snow-capped mountains, crisp winter air and cosy moments of relaxation. In
between: days on the slopes, peaceful walks, historic sites and regional cuisine. Five days that show just how varied a winter holiday in the Ybbstal Alps can be.
From every holiday resort and every accommodation, it’s easy to plan your excursions and combine them flexibly depending on the weather and snow conditions.

Day 1

Winter tales of the town and the blacksmith’s trade

Your winter holiday begins in Waidhofen an der Ybbs. A stroll through the old town takes you past historic façades, small shops and Schloss Rothschild. The route then continues to Ybbsitz, where everything revolves around fire and iron at the FeRRum and along the Blacksmiths’ Mile. For the evening, it’s worth having a look at the latest issue of the Wochenpost: there might be an Advent market, a concert, a guided tour or another event on the programme.

Day 2

Winter in the mountains at Hochkar

Today we’re heading up to theHochkar. Skiers and snowboarders spend the day on the slopes, whilst cross-country trails, snowshoe paths and hiking trails offer winter adventures away from the slopes too. In between, there’s time for a break with a view of the snow-capped peaks. Back in Göstling an der Ybbs, the Ybbstaler Solebad awaits: warm brine water, tranquillity and a relaxing way to round off a day in the snow.

Day 3

Winter tranquillity along the Ybbs

On the third day, the tranquil side of winter comes to the fore. The journey takes you through Opponitz and St. Georgen am Reith to Hollenstein on the Ybbs. Winter walks along the Ybbs, snow-covered forests and small villages characterise the day. Depending on snow conditions, there are further winter activities to enjoy around the Königsberg. Afterwards, there’s time for a cosy stop for refreshments and some regional cuisine. A day without a packed itinerary, but with plenty of scenery and fresh air.

Day 4

Snow on the Ötscher and history in Gaming

In Lackenhof am Ötscher, you can choose from skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing or winter walking today. When there is sufficient snow, the large cross-country skiing centre offers a variety of routes, ranging from short stretches to more challenging trails. Afterwards, it’s off to Gaming. The historic Carthusian monastery offers a peaceful contrast to the morning in the snow and is the perfect place to enjoy a culinary break. This way, a winter day in the mountains and culture come together in a single day.

Day 5

Winter moments around Lunz am See

To round off the holiday, we head to Lunz am See. A stroll along the wintry lakeside, a lap on the Seeauloipe cross-country ski trail or a trip to theMaiszinken make the final day of the holiday complete. Which of these is possible depends on the current snow conditions. Perhaps there’ll even be time to revisit the spot that’s become your personal favourite during the trip. Head out into the snow once more, stop for a relaxing break, or simply enjoy the view of the winter landscape.
