Forested gorges, peaks offering stunning views, the landscape along the River Ybbs and the striking Ötscher mountain range characterise the region’s nature parks. The Lower Austria Eisenwurzen Nature Park, the Ybbstal Nature Park and the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park combine natural and cultural landscapes with recreation, education and regional development.
Each nature park has its own particular focus. In the Eisenwurzen, the focus is on the interplay between nature, craftsmanship and regional history. The Ybbstal Nature Park is developing along the River Ybbs into a unified nature park region. In the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park, high peaks, deep gorges, waterfalls and an extensive network of footpaths define the landscape.

The Ybbstal Nature Park links eight local authorities along the River Ybbs. Forests, meadows, water bodies and cultural landscapes take centre stage. Projects focusing on species and water conservation, as well as walking and cycling opportunities, characterise the nature park region.

The Ötscher, the Ötschergräben and the Tormäuer form a striking landscape of gorges, waterfalls, forests and alpine pastures. Around 300 kilometres of footpaths and numerous nature interpretation programmes provide access to the nature park.
There were plans to dam the Erlauf between Toreck and Trübenbach and to build a new power station here, in the so-called ‘Tormäuern’
It was as a result of this resistance that the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park was eventually established
