Step by step through the mountain winter

Crunchy snow, crisp winter air and silent forests: snowshoeing reveals the snow-covered landscape of the Ybbstal Alps at its most tranquil. Away from the ski slopes, varied routes lead through deep, snow-covered woods, over gentle slopes and to vantage points around Lackenhof am Ötscher and the Hochkar.

Good to know

Snowshoes distribute your body weight over a larger area, making it easier to walk in deep snow. No prior experience is required for easy, signposted routes. Sturdy, water-repellent hiking boots, gaiters, warm technical clothing and walking poles ensure comfort and a secure footing.

A winter adventure away from the slopes

Walking at a steady pace gets the blood flowing whilst leaving plenty of scope to consciously take in the wintry surroundings. Beneath the blanket of snow, the Ybbstal Alps seem almost transformed: Sounds are muffled, branches are topped with white caps, and between the trees, glimpses of the surrounding mountain landscape keep opening up.
Whether it’s a short beginner’s walk or a longer tour through the forest – several signposted routes make it easy to get to know this gentle winter sport.

Be considerate in the winter woodland

The winter habitat demands special consideration. Wild animals find very little food during the cold season and must use their energy reserves sparingly. You should therefore stay on designated paths and not follow any animal tracks you come across. Dogs must be kept on a lead.
Peace and quiet are also part of the nature experience: if you pause for a moment, you may spot roe deer, chamois, hares or foxes from a respectful distance.

Snowshoes can be hired from rental outlets in Lackenhof and on the Hochkar, amongst other places. You should check
the current opening hours and availability directly with the respective businesses in advance.
