At 1,536 metres above sea level, the Schwarzalm is the highest alpine hut on the Eisenstraße in Lower Austria. From mid-June to mid-September, the owners, Brigitte and Johannes Reitbauer, look after the young cattle belonging to 15 alpine farmers from the region. The Schwarzalm has plenty to offer. Both short and long circular walks, some leading to mountain peaks (e.g. Ringkogel, Hochwurz, etc.), can be undertaken starting from the Schwarzalm.
From Bärenlacke, it takes about 35 minutes to walk to the Ybbstalerhütte. This family-friendly ÖAV hut is situated at an altitude of 1,343 metres and was first built in 1923. The Dürrenstein massif not only offers magnificent alpine landscapes but is also characterised above all by karst formations. This diversity of landforms makes the area an ideal destination for both day trips and multi-day excursions.
