River Cycling

The Ybbstal Cycle Route and the Erlauftal Cycle Route

From Waidhofen an der Ybbs to Lunz am See, the heart of the Ybbstal Cycle Route runs particularly close to the river, largely along the former railway line. In Lunz, the Erlauftal Cycle Route joins the route and continues on to Gaming. In between lie plenty of water, tranquil stretches of valley and plenty of spots to take a break. Two cycle routes that link up seamlessly, demonstrating just how well the Ybbstal Alps can be explored from the saddle.

Those who prefer a shorter route will find further options for a cycling trip along the two rivers with the Little Ybbstal Cycle Route and the Little Erlauftal Cycle Route.

Ybbstal Cycle Route

The centrepiece of the Ybbstal Cycle Route runs for 55 kilometres from Waidhofen an der Ybbs to Lunz am See. For the most part, the route follows the former Ybbstalbahn railway line, away from motor traffic and always close to the river. Crossing old arched bridges, passing through a short tunnel and the Ofenloch, the route takes you past Opponitz, Hollenstein an der Ybbs, St. Georgen am Reith and Göstling an der Ybbs to LakeLunz. Along the way, you’ll find sandbanks by the water, historic hammer mills and rest areas where a quick break tends to last a little longer. The route climbs only gently and is therefore also well suited to relaxed days out cycling with the family. Anyone wishing to continue beyond Lake Lunz can join the Erlauftal Cycle Route directly there.

An overview of the distances between the towns:

  • Waidhofen an der Ybbs – Opponitz: 13 km
  • Opponitz – Hollenstein: 12.5 km
  • Hollenstein – St. Georgen am Reith: 10 km
  • St. Georgen am Reith – Göstling: 9 km
  • Göstling – Lunz am See (Lake Lunz): 11 km

The Short Ybbstal Cycle Route

From Waidhofen an der Ybbs to Gresten, the Kleine Ybbstal Cycle Route winds its way through the varied landscape of the Mostviertel. The section from Waidhofen an der Ybbs to Ybbsitz is particularly lovely: this family-friendly route runs alongside the River Ybbs and, with its lovely spots by the water, constantly invites you to stop for a break. Ideal for a leisurely cycling trip with the whole family.

Erlauftal Cycle Route

The Erlauftal Cycle Route follows the River Erlauf right into the Ybbstal Alps. From Gaming, the more challenging section leads via Pfaffenschlag to Lunz am See. After the climb, there’s a descent to the lake, where the Erlauftal Cycle Route joins the Ybbstal Cycle Route directly. This makes it easy to combine the two routes. Along the way, you’ll pass by riverbanks, small villages, forests and views of the mountains of the Ybbstal Alps.
